Saber Interactive had already been employed to do the console ports before that change (I don't remember quite when), They were also to provide updates and bug fixes to the PC when the console port came out. That's where we are now. They haven't talked to or used the community and beta testers that were used by Flaming Fowl until now, but they're at least paying some attention to the bug reports and Discord.
As for why, no-ones actually said, but: Flaming Fowl are a small independent owned and run by a couple of people who lead the studio. Twin Sails (formerly Asmodee Digital) are owned by Embracer Group, an investment company. Saber Interactive are also owned by Embracer Group.
Will totally keep an eye out for Flaming Fowl's next game. Embracer Group mucked this one up big time and don't care at all. Small fish to them.
I wouldn't really say the blame is as much as original devs gone as it is an overly ambitious project to begin with. I have never seen any video game company port their games onto other platforms AND promise Crossplay between all platforms upon release yet alone deliver the feature. Crossplay usually comes much later after port releases and they stabilize port releases. My guess is the development team overpromised and underdelivered.
The multiplayer experience got heavily flubbed due to the attempt at crossplay implementation is my best guess. But yeah given the context above, insanely ambitious and the dev lead who didn't push back hard enough on business managers and maybe went as far as promising to deliver it should probably be fired.
