You could technically also try playing 2 characters each, I'd argue both that and just taking 1 each are both perfectly fine for 2P, so there's no fault in trying both and play the way you enjoy more.
With that said, the balance of the characters is different at different player counts. At 2 players, since there are less enemies, it's easier to avoid damage by moving out of range, which makes healing weaker. On the other hand, at 4 players, it's harder to avoid damage since there are more enemies, so healers are stronger. I would recommend you don't play any healing characters for 2 player if you play 1 character each (which means no tinkerer in 2 player). But if you do 2 characters each, then healers are good and fine.
If you guys don't mind controlling 2 characters each you can go for it, but I'd recommend one character for now since this game has a really steep learning curve and it's better to just learn using 1 character so it's less overwhelming.
Yes, it's great for 2 player and can be played up to 4 player. The game is designed around campaign progression and can be played over online multiplayer. It's very much a co-operative tactical game and a very good one at that.
