First, everyone in your online group needs to buy the DLC. Then the host then needs to enable the DLC on the save. You get a copy of the save whenever you play, and when you get a mercenary to level 5 you'll be then able to play that save offline to do the Solo Scenario. Then when you next play the host will be notified that you've done the Solo Scenario, and your character will have the Solo Item.
Is it possible to add the Solo DLC to a campaign but for the other players not have the Solo DLC and for us to continue to play the main campaign?
So I as the host of the campaign can do the Solo mission but the other players can not but we still get to play campaign and I don't lock them out as we all don't have the same DLC?
If you just want to see if you can beat the DLC with your current character, you could make a copy of your save and play using that. This obviously has no impact on the shared version.
