The game is harsh, but actually there is no real penalty for failure, other than your RL time.
You even get to keep the xp/gold you earned on any "suicide job",
and now you know the exact nature of the challenge, when you return for a second attempt, you can tailor your cards/equipment
to increase chances of success, load up on pierce abilities if the baddies are shielded etc.
The only other thing to keep in mind with side quests is that there is a personal goal to complete 6 side quests so if you're about to retire a character or two, you might want to leave them there until you see that you're not getting that personal goal. I don't think you can get those closed off by main storyline quests so they'll stick around.
