why does the herald receive poison or 3 damage as well as the ally when using this ability?

Came here to ask the same question. The first time I used this ability this morning both the herald and the targeted character were poisoned. The second time, all allies were poisoned. The only active card is "Spread the Plague."

Doesn't work correctly. Would be a cool ability when working as it should. But always dealing 3 damage to yourself, because you can't clean the poison often enough from yourself, just to do one damage more, is kind of stupid
