The mercenary gains anything the bear loots. Seems poor game logic.
I did wonder if it would work and was prepared to restart the round. However the scenario showed the chest as successfully looted. It should have shown it as a fail immediately.

Though I have not played this in a while, I agree with you. If the bear loots it, it should count. I think there is another mission, where you have to step on pressure plates, if the bear stops on it it does not count as well. Like a bear should wiegh more then most of the chars in game.
Unless they change that, its been a while, just about to restart a new game.
