my friend and i have a inside joke about loving to be hit between the legs because that is what playing this game feels like
To answer your question though, yes, the game is definitely worth it. It's a third of the price of the physical board game and is the same game but with faster setup times and automatic monster AI (a pain to learn when playing physically).
An ideal difficulty curve should start from 6 then slowly goes up. Dont get me wrong, I dont have difficulty issues with the game. Im playing GH for the first time a week ago. Now im on hard and playing the 6th or 7th mainquest. It does get easier the further you get but early game is still badly designed. The first scenario would have been perfect if it only contains 2 rooms. And then from 4th mainquest onward proceed like the tabletop.
Its like in Dark Souls where you start in one of the midgame dungeons instead of the beginners area.
Gloomhaven is my favorite game, so I say it's worth it if you like a challenge. ;)
That's what's caught me out. I'm so use to PC games teaching you how to play through tutorials/doing I'd forgotten that when I used to play boardgames the first thing you did was read through the rules to properly understand how the mechanics work.
Gloomhaven is an one of a kind strategy game. It is pretty difficult for beginners. But for sure doable once u got the hang in it.
I got some easy talk I guess as I've played a lot of Gloomhaven at home (boardgame). It's overwhelming, but very, very nice to play if u like these cards strategy.
What's there to understand?
Rules are simple, true. choose 2 cards, wait for monsters, activate cards, and still many complains about first few lvls on normal.
It's just not picking combo's and go, u gotta be careful what u do, which cards u choose, which monsters u gonna attack, how to adapt on their cards. It is a very tactical boardgame. And of course that bit of luck of not pulling no-damage cards.
Problem arises later on, some missions are kinda designed for you to fail first time. SOme missions borderline unplayable with certain character composition. But overall everything is doable if you apply yourself to the task, and nost trying to sleepwalk through the game.
