That is going to make you want to punch the screen!
Why would that make you angry? If you have advantage and get a x0 (curses) and say a +2, you get the +2 and you just ate one of the x0 from the deck... big win
One of the mechanics of Gloomhaven which isn't discussed in the online game is how the modifier deck works and it's very important that you understand this deck.
Your modifier deck works as follows:
Every time you perform an attack, you draw a single card from the modifier deck. This card is then placed in the modifier discard pile. There it stays until either a curse, or bless card is drawn. Then, at the end of the turn, all the discarded cards are shuffled back into the modifier deck.
Now, there are some important rules to note about this.
1). The more positive cards you draw, the less chance you have of drawing them later. You need to hit your curse or bless ( x 0 or x 2) card to reshuffle the deck.
2). Cards added into the deck from enemies or from scenario effects are removed permanently when they happen. This is true for bless cards as well.
3).Perk points allow you to modify this deck.
Early Gloomhaven is challenging. I've had bad luck streaks cost me scenarios on multiple occasions. It happens. Here are some tips to really help you avoid this bad luck.
1). The first perk point you get on ANY character should be used to take the perk which avoids negative scenario effects. (If it's offered to that mercenary. Some mercenaries don't offer it like the Brute.) This is MASSIVE and will allow you to avoid adding curses, starting wounded and poisoned, discarding cards, etc...
2). Negative modifiers should be removed next. Lower the probability that you will draw a negative modifier. Reliable damage is the biggest boon in the game.
3). Be VERY mindful when choosing rolling modifiers. As stated above, if your draw a curse with a rolling modifier the curse will negate all the damage you would have done. Be especially mindful of this if your perks allow you to add a LOT of rolling modifiers. You aren't required to add them to the deck. I've intentionally left out rolling modifiers on characters so that I can guarantee damage.
4). Advantage/Muddle can be used to "purge" your deck OR force a deck to be reshuffled before a big fight. This is an advanced tactic but when you are on that final part of the scenario and you have few cards left and they absolutely HAVE to do damage, consider using a big ability with advantage to force the deck to be reshuffled. Mouse over the character on the map (not the portrait on the left) to see what is left in your modifier deck.
5). Enemies SHARE a modifier deck. This can be BRUTAL to a team if there are multiple enemies and they spend a turn drawing all the negative modifiers. This means that on the next turn, they are going to absolutely wreck your mercenaries. Make sure you plan accordingly. Muddle can be an absolute game changer for your team by forcing them to draw that curse/bless card and reshuffle the deck.
Good luck and enjoy!
Thats actually an official rule modifaction. Its already in the boardgame rules :-)
Anybody know a single thing about modding? I'm sure this can be done with relative ease if someone knows the tools...
