i find that purple goes well with red(red counters cav which counters purple), green with yellow (green counters cav so yellow can fit multiple roles) and blue i use for primarily for attacking settlements although they can still be very helpful in a field battles.
i'll mix purple and green with red for armies that i want punching through on field battles and overwhelming the enemy with holes that can be exploited by infantry and horses.
eventually i usually have 2 armies marching side by side that can complement each other and allow me to siege settlements while the other clears off any ambulatory threats, sometimes i leave it in ambush mode so that the circle covers the besieging army and intercepts any threats.
Red or Yellow for cav can be whatever you can afford and you don,t have to completely fill it with red you can have 4 cav and a couple of militia/-later dragon units (like spears or swords) to round your army.
Blue I put two missile units (archer/crossbowman) or later two missile cav again crossbow/archers, then two ballista, and two catapults. Early game before you can afford art try get flaming shot which works for archers and ballistas.
If you want an army for putting out rebellions before they get out of hand you can get by with one general with mix units. Any general can do this using militia units but the Yellow/Commander general is ideal because he can mix units (inf/cav/missile) with standard troops.
And then there's the special units some factions can get which fill roles depending on your General's rank.
rock-scissors-paper concept: ie spears vs horses, horses vs missile, swords vs spears and missile/art vs all but if not protected than useless. General guidelines but is adaptable for instance cav can tear up sword inf (or even spears if you catch them from the flank or behind but need to pull em out quickly after the charge. )

Though I have been doing some army restructuring with a few. If it wasn't for steam having issues, I'd show you the other army builds I have tried out.
Here's Cao Cao though

As Han - just use full stacks of Azure Dragons (research lower agri branch to unlock them). They are good for every situation until you get Protectors of Heaven at Empire level.
If for some reason for you full stacks of Azures give bad results in autoresolve - add some Zaporozhian (or whatever I can't pronounce this) Infantry, the 2h sword dudes. But they suck in manual battle - in manual you'd better get full stacks of Azures.
In this game cav and missile deal most damage,so sword and spear infantry are there just to be a punching bag and hold line, also try to recruit units that have charge reflection or shield wall, makes them more tanky
Morale trumps all. True for all total war games. Who has most morale wins.
