Three Kingdoms is also worthy the play but is a far different game from Shogun 2 due to added complexity in the campaign map mechanics - there's a lots going on and you'll spend a good portion of time on the campaign map menus. Whereas in Shogun 2 the campaign mechanic is far more straightforward and simpler. There're pros and cons for this.
Battles are pretty much on pair to each others.
Consider also that Three Kingdoms is a recent game and requires a beefy PC to run smoothly. I also would suggest to start with the standard game and adds DLC later on.
Both are great games and a good choice in any case with Three Kingdoms requiring to invest more time learning the game mechanics than Shogun 2.
Are TK campaign game mechanics interesting/ are they adding to the immersion?
In that case if you look up at a Youtube channels as mentioned above or even go to Total War Academy and watch what are some of the main mechanic of the game that would gives you a good information.
If you prefer TW historical games then I suggest you should also take a look at TW Pharaoh.
If you like Shogun 2 but want one where diplomacy isn't completely insane, and like building up your faction and it's territory, TK might be for you. Records sounds like more of your speed than romance if you prefer the history to fantasy.
But like others said, go peak at some game play and that'll be better advice than us.
this may be it, most people are casuals who don't play these games for more then 100 hours, they generated hype
... Three Kingdoms Shogun? Would love to see that next from CA.
There are always some things that could be improved and sadly won't because there is no more support for the game, but you can mod them (like I did regarding general abilities in Records).
