Some comments in this mod from October of this year claim that it's working fine for 'em. Though I've never tried.
From my time playin TW online, on warhammer series games, I recall that having smaller, simple armies was more effective due to managing them, along other reasons. Like stick with few strategies instead of going for several things to pay attention on the battlefield. Obviously in campaign you cant do that, but then there's pause (and slow mo IIRC)
Don't know why CA decided to take away AI control in their newer games. I hope they revert that decision on their next installment.
