But Yuan Shao always has large amounts of armies trying to use ambush tactics to take down few armies one by one so not to end up fighting several thousand troops.
I do not play this much as I am more into Thrones of britannia and likes of Attila mainly
sometimes Napolean and empire I do have Rome 2.
I have not played that much as i always play ancient empires mod for Attila as it is Rome 2 era. As for the sentinels and strategists in this game how do i get the ability to recruit better warriors for them instead of recruiting the crappy basic units?
Do I need to win so many battles or get traits for the generals or something to enable recruitment of heavy infantry, cavalry and better archers?
You aren't going to get many advanced units just to have. What you have available to you now is largely what you're going to have for the entire game.
Once your generals reach Lv.3 and Lv.5, you'll unlock some of Zhang Yan's unique Black Mountain infantry units, but they're more about charging and inflicting scare during ambush battles... not really heavy troops.
Besides that, you need to pay attention to your underground network (research).
As your underground network reaches certain parts of the map, you unlock limited number of special units that you can hire into your armies.
If you want cavalry specifically, you'll want to expand your network into northwest China.
And that's also a good direction for Zhang Yan to go.
Take out Gao Gan and reclaim Yanmen and Taiyuan.
Then either stay there or push further west to Shuofang.
