Other than that, I'd recommend ignoring all other DLC unless they're free.
As for not having the 'Three Kingdom period', that depends. Yes, there isn't the traditional story between Wei, Shu and Wu yet there are still mechanics in place where three kingdoms will emerge on each play through, yet this is dependent on which faction is in the best position to become one of the three. For instance, your own faction may become a kingdom instead of the norm, so it's more like a sandbox take on the era and is more accommodating for those of us who like to role play.
So if you don't mind that, the game is still awesome.
Unfortunately yes, the game has plenty of severe and minor bugs left unresolved which will never get fixed, along with recently implemented mechanics which are either not balanced or don't work properly.
The game has random crashes to desktop, yes. Unfortunately it was never fixed. It happens completely at random whether you click a notification ingame or during a long battle. It doesn't happen often, but it does happen enough times to leave a bad taste.
As for severe bugs, I mean gameplay bugs which crippled or ruined game mechanics and made them no longer work properly. As an example:
- As of latest updates, the Nanman elephants cannot attack city gates. This basically breaks the entire siege gameplay of Nanman factions because elephants are their only siege units. CA didn't fix this so now Nanman players can't do sieges properly.
- The spy feature worked perfectly until the latest updates. You could use spies to extensively manipulate enemy factions in so many various ways. Ever since the patch however, the spy feature has been crippled to the ground and it's now a completely useless feature that does nothing and can't be used 99% of the time.
- The new mechanics such as randomly generated invaders were terribly overtuned and broken. They did some "balancing" however the mechanic itself is still garbage while the 2nd version of this mechanic doesn't work at all.
These are just some of the gameplay issues with the game, there are countless others unfortunately. I've been with the game for a long time and I believe anyone interested in it has the right to know how messy it is and full of bugs, so buy at your own risk if you're interested.
That was CA's mistake too.
The latest updates brought changes to the morale system, which basically ruined the battles in the game because you can barely touch the enemy army and they immediately rout. Extensive feedback was being given on the issue, but they did nothing to fix it.
On a side note I haven´t played the game for a couple of months and can´t say much about those new bugs or balancing issues so there is that. But I almost didn´t have issues when I played it back then.
Its not the best optimized game but is ok.
