At microing generals.
I haven't done a Liu Bei campaign in a while, but I remember enjoying it as a very Dynasty Warriors kinda experience.
I kept the actual army units low (though militia were 100% free if you remain regionless) and I never combine Guan Yu and Zhang Fei's armies together with Liu Bei.
Keeping them separate allows you to bypass Liu Bei's initial army limit of 1.
It does involve a bit of RNG whether decent generals show up in your court looking for work... but eventually you'll end up with nine good generals that go around beating up Yellow Turbans and refusing to capture land.
Always cycle charge. Don't leave your generals in the thick of it to take hits. Often you're able to charge in, do a nice smash, and pull out without taking damage.
Edit:
Added an old screenshot of my MoH Liu Bei campaign.

I give this a try. Whats RNG?
I take a similar approach, but I take land. Following the mission lead you deep into the Zhang brother lands, and you will get killed. Instead, fight the 1st looter and hopefully capture the looter general(is cheaper since you do not need to pay 1k to recruit him), move toward Lu Zhi town, and do the same with the 2nd looter. Here is where you stop, move into Lu Zhi town influence just in case you get attack, recruit a strategist and exchange all Lui Bei unit to militia(free upkeep when no land), My stack usually look like this Lui Bei(2x spear, 2x archer), strategist(4x archer, 2x trebuchet, and 1 more general(no retinue). Stand still and muster.
While you are mustering, probably about 5-6 turns, keep checking your diplomacy, and sell non-aggressive pact/military access to whoever willing to pay. You probably fully mustered when Zhang Fei and Guan Yu show up. Merge/transfer your army composition to your liking, I usualy have 1 real army(Guan Yu-2x spear,2x sword, Lui Bei 2x spear, 2x archer and Strategist 4x archer, 2x trebuchet), 2 x army with zhang fei +2-5 generals.
When you ready, start taking down one of the Zhang Brother at a time, divide and conquer. Tunnel vision on one brother at a time until you wipe him.
I suggest take the farmland north of where you stand, then another farmland to the north, then swing east and take Wei(the town), here you will probably will fight Zhang Bo, Beat him and chase him until you finish off his faction. Then turn to Zhang Liang, do the same thing. After you wipe the 2 brothers, head north and fight Zhang Jie.
Couple of suggestion,
- move all 3 of your armies close together, the zhang brother will use night battle to pick you off, just retreat. Most time, he will ran out of movement. When it is your turn, gang up on him.
- you can also use 1 of the army(no retirnue) as bait, and ambush your main army in front.
- once you have land, establish a trade with whoever next to you. So, you don't get back stab. Lu Zhi will not back stab you, but that gray faction sometime will.
- if you think you will lost a piece of land, happen when you focus on one brother, and the other zhang come and attack you, Don't hesitate to sell it to someone if you can...LOL
I remember that I did the initial missions of Liu Bei back in the day.
Oh and any faction that isn't near the north is just doomed in MoH. Cao Cao can teleport later on up there thou it might be too late by then.
I was able to do it as Lu Zhi with this

you can disable it at any time too.
It's not impossible at all.
There is no need to cheat.
Just because you can technically clinge to Luoyang to keep them from winning doesn't make the campaign good or fun.
Forget about rest and build your income, once Zhang Jie finish up with the north, he will march down. Then, you will have to face both Zhang Jie and Zhang Liang. Zhang Jie troops are way more premium/powerful then his 2 little brothers.
Here are some suggestions,
Economy :
-- Rebel farming will be your main income. In case you don't know, the Zhang brothers cause fervor, As long as one of them alive, the rebellion never stop. All your town will have small pocket of rebellion every 2-3 turns. This is why have 3 armies is the key, your main will continue fight Zhang Jie and push him north until you wipe him. The 2 armies(only generals), you will spread them out at your territory and "farm" local rebel. Beat and release them will net you gold and unity point.Addition, this will level up your generals, imagine having lvl 6-7 generals in mid game while other fraction only have lvl 4-5. A level 6-8 zhang fei in mid game is a beast. And yes, 3 generals can beat 200-400 men rebels in romance mode.
-- Build Shu-Han tax building. Patch 1.7 make this building very attractive, it is free to build, give you income, and +% on militia replenishment. And guess what unit your main army has....
-- upgrade your town to lvl 4 as much/fast as your economy allow. lvl 4 town has wall, local rebel cannot take it down in one turn, that buy you time for your "rebel farming" armies to reach.
Military:
-- Spec as many as point you can into the red reform tree, and try to reach the "+10% replenishment". The Zhang brothers faction mechanic allow them to replenish their troop crazy fast. With this reform and the shu-han tax building, you can almost match them.
-- after you win a battle, do not "claim victory" yet, use your generals to kill off as many fleeing troops as possible. Heck, I even run my strategist out to cut down a few.
-- After beating the zhang brother main stack, always chose the recruit troops option. You get a bit more replenishment, they get a little less, and you continue to give chase...
-- After you beat zhang Liang and heading to meet Zhang Jie, it is a good idea to start upgrading/swap Liu Bei unit to some militia cavalry. Zhang Jie has "tyrant slayers", a cavalry unit that hit VERY hard on general, you militia cavalry can provide a buffer of their charge damage.
Diplomacy:
-- Continue to sell non-aggressive pact/military access to anyone willing to pay. Once you have land, you basically invite them to pass your land and join the "hunting" party. I have a few campaign where Dong Zhuo sent Lu Bu over to help out.
-- Keep a trade with the bandit faction Zhang Yan, he has no honor, the trade agreement will keep him from back stab you. Don't worry about other factions, as long as you fighting the zhang brothers, you are "Respected" and everyone love you.
-- Optional, keep tab on Liu Chong/Tao Qian in the diplomacy screen, and see if they have negative food. These two are your closest power players. Sell them food, and they will raise an army to come help.
Happy Hunting. :)
I checked twice just for the memes, prob I see now is Zhang Liang usually rush pingyuan so even if you rush your missions you are likely not getting pingyuan as reward for helping Han Fu. Still had no problem beating him out of my cities with Zhang Fei and Guan Yu, after that you can just steamroll either Lu Zhi finishes him off (what happened on one run) or you do it since it would be next to you on Pingyuan, then you start building stuff for the other two brothers, keeping in mind you should have 3 full stacks generals by now (you can get rid of most units since they are useless and expensive for your economy)
If I can help you let me know I am pretty much a 3k geek and kinda need "new challenges"
