Report a translation problem
I have played one Dong Zhou campaign and the child emperor ran off to Sun Jian. I was making 5k a turn and was among the top three in faction strength. Haven't had much outside discussion w/ folks about if it's a common event or not. My reply was mostly in jest (keyword mostly because you are playing Dong Zhou after all).
You could of read the pop-up, the game tells you directly why it happens...
You need to reach a high enough prestige. It's not about what rank you are compared to the AI, but the actual rank you have unlocked. Just below King I believe is the minimum to maintain him.
So, to reiterate;
You need to be high ranked in general to hold him.
Rank in comparison to the AI is irrelevant.
Town level is irrelevant.
Income, character level, turn time etc. is irrelevant.
You need to hold a high enough rank (one below King If I recall) to hold him. Nothing else.
