Don't you have to be married or something?

Fighting a battle was involved, but beyond that there did not seem to be any other requirement. The big issue was frequently too many events trying to fire in the same turn, so the one giving you Zhao Yun was dropped by the code. The patch meant to fix this gave the event a gargantuan priority boost to ensure it preceded all others, as I recall.

Zhao Yun came to 190 Liu Bei campaign 99% of my playthrough, just do some random battle and there is an event Zhao Yun will appear.

Liu Bei really gets soooo many good generals. Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, Zhuge Liang, Zhao Yun

Cao Cao and Sun Jian aren't any slouches, either

Liu Bei should get Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, Zhao Yun, Wei Yan, Pang Tong, and Zhuge Liang (6)

Cao Cao should get Xiahou Dun, Xiahou Yuan, Dian Wei, Xu Chu, Yue Jin, and Sima Yi, and a good chance of Guo Jia (6-7). Most come pretty early. Also several as-yet generic guys like Cao Ren, Yu Jin, and a few others with the rather gaping hole where Cao Hong should fit.

Sun Jian should get Huang Gai, Cheng Yu, Sun Ce, Sun Quan, Sun Ren, and Zhou Yu with a very high chance for Gan Nng, and a good chance for Zhang Hong and Zhou Tai (6-9), and also has some as yet faceless men in Lu Su, and such. With a modicum of luck, he has the most unique/OP guys, arguably.

as an aside, does Xu Shu actually exist any more? I haven't seen him show up in months

I believe Xu Shu is tied to the players version of Zhuge Liang's event chain, so he spawns first then you have the option to let him go and will be given Zhuge Liang later. But for the AI it skips right to directly spawning Zhuge Liang in to Liu Bei's faction and Xu Shu never physically appears in the campaign map.

Its similar to Diao Chan where a generic version was used the the event chain at release which only appeared physically in the faction when controlled by the player. Then when a unique model was added they only swapped it out for the generic one, but didn't change alter the event chain so you still only saw them when playing as the faction in question. I think this was updated later for Diao Chan so she would join the faction even if it was AI controlled but I'm not sure if they have done the same for Xu Shu yet.

Interesting. I've not even seen the event for Xu Shu pop up in several Liu Bei Campaigns. Manage to get Zhuge Liang anyways, but sometimes not Pang Tong

In my main Liu Bei campaign which I saw through to completion, I had the event chain pop up where he joins you, is then forced to join Cao Cao after he threatened to have his mother killed and left telling Liu Bei where to find Zhuge Liang it events occurred in the novel. But curiously enough I was allied to Cao Cao at that point in the campaign so it didn't really fit with how events turned out.

I guess there must be a back up event for the player to get hold of Zhuge Liang if the main one doesn't trigger. In all my campaigns though I honestly don't remember ever having seen Pang Tong at all, so I wonder if him appearing is partly RNG based without any kind of back up event to make sure he actually spawns at some point.

Yeah, when I played Liu Bei 190 I got Xu Shu, but he never left interestingly enough. Despite the fact that he never left, the backup event chain for Zhuge Liang as you call it fired, allowing me to still get him -- instead of Xu Shu recommending him, now simply a generic "scholar friend" recommends him.

Pang Tong (oddly enough) arrived before Zhuge Liang. A quick look through the db indicates the window for him joining Liu Bei's faction starts before Zhuge Liang, which explains it.

I am assuming using TPY mod would mess with all of these events? I started using it pretty early on because of the lack of unique heirs and I hate seeing the map turn into a bunch of generic rulers.

Pang Tong betrays me half the time. To the point that I now will track him down and kill him every time it happens.
Wu is probably the most favored faction in every way. Geographically they are the safest. I don't know if Nanman has changed this, but they are in a far better position than any mid or northern latitude factions. Lots of good characters. Cao Cao does have some good ones. Sima Yi arrives as a great general without even needing to build him up. Xu Chu and Dian Wei are absolute beasts. I just fought a huge battle at a copper mine against two stacks of Wu troops with Sun Ce and Sun Quan leading each army. Dian Wei just stood in the middle battle the whole time wrecking. He and Xu Chu are my favorite champions after Guan Yu.

As long as the creator has taken these in to consideration it should be okay, but its hard to tell due to the just how many of these events are in game.
