That's understandable, the ending was underwhelming in some ways and infuriating in others, but if you started with the War of the Five Kings, or Robert's Rebellion, or somewhere in between, and give players choices with events, similar to like Sun Jian dying or not, obviously it would end up TOTALLY different, so in a way you could fix that ending I guess!
I know what you mean with the units, but I think between the show, the lore, and some creative thinking I think you'd get enough variety for it to not get boring.
I mean I've made suggestions based on culture (the North, Dornish, Westerlands etc) where you do see some variety in the show, and you could have faction bonuses for terrain and stuff, so obviously North armies getting bonuses in Snow, Vale units getting bonuses in hills.
Then faction specific units, like the Bolton heavy spears, Lannister heavy infantry, things like that.
Then general specific units, like Ramsay getting his own archers, Styr getting Thenns, Drogo having his own Bloodrider units.
Obviously some things you might need to make up, or take some creative licence with, but I'm not even an expert on the lore of the regions and houses and stuff and I can think of these things, so I'm sure if potential modders researched in detail, I bet there'd be enough to go on.
With the magic thing, that's one of the reasons I think 3K is a better fit for a GoT mod than say the Warhammer games, because obviously for most of the wars Thrones has more in common with something like 3K than it does with Warhammer.
I don't think that just because it's technically fantasy people will want and expect loads of magic, anyone interested in Thrones knows its more about the politics and normal wars, magic only figures in a few battles really.
