Lack of information on "forming empire"
Once you reach the endgame of three kingdoms you get option to form empire with other factions whom aren't within alliances/coalitions. However there is no information regarding what happens when you for empire with someone.

I formed empire as me being emperor with Yuan Shao's faction (none-contender). Suddenly my whole economy went upside down. From earning about well over 10,000 gold to around -4,000 gold and noticing im paying 21,000 gold worth of tributes apparently to her.

What is the transaction here? Is this case where she pays tribute to me, but in exchange i sustain her entire armies and cities?

Having her is definitely worth while as useless vassals can't be bothered to wage war, when ordered to. While empire member seems to throw doom stacks at the enemy when i call to arms without a target.

An Empire basically works like a form of Alliance where on of its members is designated as its Emperor. All of its members have a large chunk of their income divided equally among themselves, often resulting in the larger player faction loosing a lot of its money to the smaller members.

To be honest there isn't really much benefit in creating empires as the mechanic works right now compared to just making the other factions your vassal instead.

Good to know

It's a bit poorly implemented that new feature just drops in and no explanation how it works. It's still better then having ton of vassals, which refuse to do anything. Giving huge chunk of income is not much of an issue since that money would just be gathering dust anyway.

It probably depends a lot on what you personally feel works best. I feel its very likely that the mechanic was designed specifically for use by Liu Hong in the Mandate of Heaven campaign to allow for most factions to still count as part of the Han Empire but still be able to act as independent factions. But CA figured they might as well allow the rest of the factions access to it once they reach the Emperor stage themselves.

The one upside of being an empire is that it has a huge impact on Ambitious individuals, often removing the need for them to be in any official post, but that's it.
