how do you handle bankruptcy for lu bu? When the financial aid from liu bei ends, my finance just goes downhill with my 1 army.

you simply live on wars and mercenary contract, winning battle grants you good chunk of money, then give the land to your mercenary lord for more money.

Lay off Xiliang cavalry and other useless general at your court after first 2-3 wins in the beginning then focus on defense and build your economy, at this step try to make peace with Cao cao and Liubei. When to getting stronger then hire more generals and troops to conquer

Just. Keep. Fighting. Honestly though, I got Lu Bu to emperor on very hard with only 3 full commandaries, and a massive deficit every turn. Just take mercenary contracts. Fight for a lord till you conquer their enemy down to one city (make sure you always gift land to your lord for big cash) then cancel your mercenary contract and take one AGAINST the guy you've just been fighting for from the guy you just crushed, it's really quite fun. Lu Bu can single handedly defeat a whole stack if you are careful with him and don't just throw him in the middle of a million spear units.

Thanks guys, your tactics helped me a lot. I sold all my expensive units on early game and my army consists of cheap units which supports lu bu. Then I just kept fighting to keep my momentum high so lu bu is an unstoppable beast.

I'd even consider running Gao Shun and Lu Bu in the same army, Gao Shun gets insane retinue upkeep reduction on Lu Bus 2 best units (camp crushers/flying cavalry) which makes your army cheap but also quite effective.
