Sun Tzu's Art of War?
does 3 kingdom take place before or after Sun Tzu's time? i keep hearing it takes place long after his time. i just wonder if it is true. if i play any warlord once i get this game i will always remember this:

"The art of war is of vital importance to the State. It is a matter of life and death, a road either to safety or to ruin. Hence it is a subject of inquiry which can on no account be neglected."

Long after, but some legends say Sun Jian, who is a warlord in this game, descended from Sun Tzu. And the Art of War was still on the tongues of all the strategists of this era.

I've always adamantly believed this. Long live the Tiger of Jiangdong.

Sun Tzu is a general/strategist from the Spring and Autumn period Chinese civil wars, which was around 500 BCE, about 700 years prior to the events in Three Kingdoms.

Just FYI, it's a running joke (within the novel!) throughout the Romance of hte Three Kingdoms that anybody with the same last name claims descent a famous person of that last name after a few centuries. Sun (孫) family has the same name, but Sun Ce's chances of actually being descended from Sun Tzu is minimal to none.

At least in Liu Bei's case, there was legal status (exemption from taxes, for example) gained from being descended from the Imperial Liu dynasty, so his claim to imperial descent had to have a legitimate basis.

But Sun Ce's claim to descent was almost certainly made up.

Yeah, most likely, but in my mind, I'll always see Sun Jian as the descendant of the legend. (Then again, I suppose Sun Jian became a legend in his own right.)

After but its safe to assume is was still very much in the minds, if you look at the Battle of Guandu as example, you can see some very text book stuff like; Maneuvering and The Attack by Fire.

Well, being a clan name certainly would imply some sort of relation connection throughout the history of time; and being that far back, the family tree, it's actually very "watered down". That's the thing about common ancestors, is that they are common; and pretty much any two persons with the same name could theoretically trace their lineage back to a common progenitor. Whether that surname's origin is based on a single person, or taken after a people living in a certain geological area or destroyed state, is another factor of influence.
