Zhao Yun will most likely serve Gonsun Zan as a general, not warlord (that's a separate faction). Based on the Guan Xi (networking mechanic), Gongsun Zan is technically in friendly terms with Liu Bei henceGongsun's closest generals like Zhao Yun will most likely have similar ties with Liu Bei. I reckon if Gonsun Zan is dead, Zhao Yun might either submit to Liu Bei or just appear in a recruitment pool. There's not much detail about the networking mechanic, so I am just speculating. Zhao Yun might also develop some kind of affinity with Liu Bei and if his ties grows stronger with Liu Bei, he might choose to leave Gongsun Zan and serve Liu Bei.

The developers did say characters will be able to switch allegiance. So, I am not surprised if Zhao Yun might switch his allegiance from Gongsun Zan to Liu Bei even if his former lord is still alive.

Agree 100% with Too Much Salt--also, the Devs mentioned certain traits and friendships and such can make it easier for generals to be recruited to a faction. They also mentioned "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" character events, so I'd be willing to bet that not only are there a lot of character traits that Liu Bei has that Zhou Yun likes, there may be an in-game event or two that helps Liu Bei bring Zhou Yun on.

Main thing im curious about is if there will be "events" to be able to recruit certain heros. Another comparison for Zhao Yun with Gongsun Zan then Liu Bei, is Taishi Ci who starts with.....Liu Yong i think? Then turns around and joins Sun Ce after he beats Liu Yong.

Likewise I know its a few years past the starting point here but im curious has to if Liu Bei will be able to recuit Zhuge Liang and if so how? Im hoping there will be a "scout" function or something that will let you be able to search for some of the more famous generals that show up later or something.

I did some research on the time period in general. My guess would be that Gonsun Zan is one of the warlords in the beginning of the game, and Zhao Yun is his general. Gonsun Zan was killed in 199 which is 9 years after the start date of the game. In regards to Taishi Ci then he was a general under Liu Yao until Sun Ce took over his territory.

I think it will be interesting to see when one might be able to recruit Zhuge Liang as historical records dates his birth in 191 (1 year after the start date of the game). And for that matter a lot of other note worthy generals who took part in the later struggle.

If I had to guess, I think there would be a certain mix of character events where a simple *yes/no* will result in a character joining your faction, while in other cases, it may simply make that more likely through in-game mechanics.

For example, with Zhou Yun, it would seem weird (at least to me) to simply make an event where Zhou Yun leaves his lord for your Shu faction just by hitting yes on an event, when there are in-game mechanics for wooing opposing faction generals to your side already. I would (hope) there might be mechanics like Zhou Yun becoming friends with Liu Bei or Guan Yu, and maybe a few event modifier bonuses that improve recruitment, but not recruitment by fiat regardless of anything else you:ve done.

For example Zhou Yun was attracted to Liu Bei:s selflesslness and nobility--but what if you play as Liu Bei and make him a greedy murderous bastard? I:d hope those decisions would be reflected in your character, which would also attract different kinds of generals to your side than in the novel, although I may be hoping for TOO much here.

On the flipside, for an unaffiliated general like Zhuge Liang, it would make sense to add him via an event-- maybe Liu Bei, Guan Yu and Zhange Fe have to disappear for a whole turn unable to take any actions while they go woo Zhuge Liang or something.

I'm guessing there might be multiple events for Zhuge Liang. Didn't Liu Bei have to visit him 4 or 5 times before he finally said yes so will probably build rapport with him in those visits.

I just hope they make some of the other officers as strong as they should be and not just a few main generals. Officers like Zhao Yun, Ma Chao, Zhou Tai, Xu Huang etc. should be absolute beasts

Zhuge Liang is my favorite character in 3K lore. I have a feeling that Zhuge Liang & Sima Yi are going to be a Strategist Pack DLC.

Leaving most things DLC would not piss me off, but if Zhuge Liang is DLC, I'm going to flip out. I think you can make the argument he's the freaking protagonist of the 2nd half of Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

It'd be like making Total War: King Arthur and have Lancelot locked behind a paywall.

Depends whether they want to introduce Sima Yi as ruler of Jin and make it a DLC but I think that would pee a lot of people off and some key events have him still part of Wei is it battle of Wu Zang Plains? Not sure on the name.

I think a lot of later characters like Sima Yi and Zhuge Liang will depend on how many months each turn is. Sima Yi was appointed by Cao Cao after he became the Imperial Chancellor in 208. That's 28 years after the start date of the campaign.
I hope that the various characters that are not assigned to a warlord or any potential non playable faction is in a general recruitment pool. Either every faction should have access to or if you control the region they were born in then you can recruit them to your faction for a few turns before they are released into the general general pool.

Has anyone had any luck recruiting Zhoa Yun via an event or something without going to war with gongsun zan or waiting for gongsun zan to be eliminated?

Turn 83 the event starts. By chance, which is high.

You can recruit him via event between turns 8 and 28 and by finishing a battle regardless if you win or lose and delegate the battle. You just have to complete it and it has a stupid low chance of happening. I had 15 campaign restarts before I got it to pop. This is also based on the actual coding, not just hear say.
