how to raise general level and unit experience in battle mode?

HI there I could not find out how to raise the level of my soldiers or the generals when i was setting up a custom battle. has anyone figured out how to do so?

You can't raise their level one by one per se, but you can choose their title which defines their starting power.

Click on a hero that is deployed in an army, and you'll see a little box in the middle of the screen. For Liu Bei it was something like: "Shoemaker" "Warlord" "King of Shu".

There is a drop down selection for each general which i think bumps up their level. I know it does give access to higher tier units if you select the third of the three options.
