Title. Its turn 11 and the guy is bloody dead. I haven't even seen him nor done anything with him, NOR am sure how he died.

He died turn 5 for me so yeah.

That's completely normal. He gets assassinated by Lu Bu as part of the story.

because he died early in history. He died in 192 in history, i.e turn 10-15. The scripted event has high percentage of him dying around that time, it's not 100% though, but around 80-90% I think

according to the history, he was assassinated by his own adopted son - Lv Bu in May, 192 BC

If you get to late game and become emperor, you unlock him as a playable character and it becomes obvious as to how he dies.

Playing as him, you're given a set number of options and picking the incorrect combination results in your early demise and the immediate succession of your empire. This is the reason why Dong Zhou almost certainly dies in the first 20 turns.

My playthrough as Cao Cao has seen Dong Zhou still alive and kicking by turn 50, and still controlling a huge amount of the map as a result.

It just seems a bit odd gameplay wise, I know historically he gets rekt by his son because he ♥♥♥♥♥♥ his wife (who was also his own wife).

I expected a bit more given how he was hyped up though.

If you're lucky (or unlucky), Dong Zhou will make the right decisions and continue to wreak death and destruction upon everyone unfortunate enough to fight his max-level cavalry charges from turn 1, which is one of the few actually difficult challenges the game might throw at you.

What kind of misinformation are you spreading, Berry?

Keep your incorrect thoughts to yourself, please and thank you.

You have two ways of unlocking Dong Zhou.

1) Defeat him while he's in an army.
or
2) Eliminate the entire faction.

You do NOT need to be Emperor. Dong Zhou does NOT come at Turn 1.

1) This option is likely the one you won't see, ever. It costs quite a lot to "recruit" Dong Zhou to your army, so the NPC does not do that until they are usually set, even on Legendary difficulty. This is IF you're lucky enough to get to that stage before Dong Zhou dies early.

2) This is the easiest way and how I did personally did it. Please note. The game does not tell you that you've unlocked it.

Another thing is... The faction has to be Dong Zhou. If he dies, and somebody else takes over, that "trigger" is gone, and destroying that "new" faction will not unlock Dong Zhou. This should be common sense.

Its a roll of the dice really. but i wish the probablility of it happening was like 50/50.

Very ignorant you are when there is so many information already confirm that unlocking him is alllowed as winning the Campaign as Emperor....

Unlocking Dong Zhuo And Lu Bu
Dong Zhuo’s faction won’t be playable if you’re just starting Total War: Three Kingdoms. There are two ways to unlock him:

Defeat his army during the campaign.
Win the campaign by becoming Emperor of China.

https://totalwar.fandom.com/wiki/Dong_Zhuo
He is not directly playable at the beginning, only unlocked after player defeats him in battle/reaches the rank of emperor.

Dong Zhuo will appear as playable once you defeat his army in battle or reach the rank of Emperor in a campaign.
