No, Zhao Yun was classed as the second strongest warrior in a fictional novel based on true events. In reality, Zhao Yun did not run off into a crowd of enemies to save A'dou and Lady Mi, and Lady Mi did not throw herself down a well, nor did Zhang Fei scare off Cao Cao's army. It was literally just a battle where Liu Bei had dragged along the people from his previous city.

Zhao Yun isn't weak. Zhao Yun absolutely destroys Gongsun Zan and an overwhelming number of other generals in duels. This is partly due to the way sentinels are designed: lower damage because they tend to use swords, but they have ridiculous evasion stats.

Sure, Gongsun Zan has higher damage with his spears, but he can't hold a candle to Zhao Yun in a duel, especially as Zhao Yun and other generals start to gear up. Sentinels are tough to take down to begin with, but they become evasion tanks when they get better gear and abilities.

Zhao Yun has a special passive skill that makes him stronger the more he fights. He is a beast in prolonged fights.

I'm actually a bit surprised that they at least never gave Zhao Yun a unique spear weapon, in spite of him being a Sentinel, but I guess CA just wanted to restrict classes to certain weapon types. He could have been a neat Sentinel / Vanguard hybrid, but he at least uses the Blue Blade as a unique weapon. He does end up obtaining the Blue Blade in the romanticized lore anyways, so it works.

Zhao Yun's only real flaw is that he doesn't put out as much AoE damage as Vanguards and some Champions. You can bog him down for quite a while with a bunch of melee troops if you don't want to duel him, but he WILL eventually break free if he can get some assistance.

It's strange: Champion's are supposed to be the prime duelists, but Sentinels end up being far better duelists; especially Zhao Yun, who can obtain the highest melee evasion if I am not mistaken. His insane melee evasion in accordance with the later-tier ability 'Elemental Vigour', which is a passive ability that goes through 5 phases depending on how long Zhao Yun is in combat, make him the best duelist in the game. Each phase of 'Elemental Vigour' gives Zhao Yun more melee evasion and grants him 'unbreakable' while he is in the 5th phase. If he has access to this passive ability, he'll even beat Lu Bu and Guan Yu with ease.

Yeah dude, strange Zilong didn't get a unique spear... I'm not sure it was intended, but Zhao Yun fought when he was 70 year old and was slaying other general with ease... Maybe his high evasion and getting stronger as the battle drags has something to do with that? lol

Also another interesting point that in the novel, Liu Bei, Zhuge Liang and Xu Shu often mentioned that Zhao Yun was a vanguard general by birth, a gift sent by the heavens to be a vanguard general. Later on in his life during Zhuge Liang nothern expedition, it mentions that if Zhuge liang didnt use him as the vanguard general, he would commit suicide but CA decided to make a him a sentinel lol....
