How exactly does having a child work?
I play as Sun Jian and i'm getting a child a turn...
Then i play as Liu Bei and he is now 49 without a single child.

Is it random?

you need to make sure both characters are at the appropriate age. i think after the female character gets to 30, the chances of children decrease and it just stops all together the closer they get to 40. With Liu Bei, when you unify with Tao Qain, you get a female character, free of charge that is like 20 while liu bei is about 33 or something and because of the early marriage, liu bei has like 4 kids. so marry em young.

I did marry him young, 18 year old while he was 30 haha
Sadly no children - what's your opinion here, i was thinking of just making another officer my heir?

Just bad RNG i guess. I know I haven't had any issues continuing the "royal" line. In my Cao Cao play through, i got 3 generations of Cao's from Cao Cao. But I've seen a lot people complaining that their faction leaders just aren't doin the nasty, especially liu bei.

But ya, thats the only thing to do really, just make sure that you aren't putting a spy as your faction leader ;)

I really hope that Guan Yu isn't a spy :(

Thank you haha

guan yu might not work either, im pretty sure him, liu bei and zhang fei are all around the same age, so you'll be facing the same problem when he dies lol

I was joking! I ended up choosing Zhuge Liang (Though i was sure that he was supposed to be very old himself).

The RNG is bad on vanilla
but there's a mod that increase the chance of having children
My Zheng Jiang-Lu Bu Couple have 6 kids(1 Girl and Eldest,5 Boys)

There has to be something people are doing wrong because I've never had issues with getting the family going for my faction leaders on a multitude of my campaigns. Very weird.

It's very random, and most of the complaints would paint some people as being extremely unlucky, but since the people talking about it probably do not outnumber the people who just aren't saying anything or don't have any issues, it's not as bad as it sounds. As for me, it's really hit or miss. Some people have 6 kids quickly, others go 20-30 years without having one at all. The bottom line, however, is that it's not totally necessary, since anyone can be placed as an heir, and most games tend not to last long enough to go through your second or third heir, which the game pretty much failsafes for every faction by giving them several family members right at the beginning. Liu Bei would be the most noticeable exception - Zhang Fei consistently inherits his position in my games.

Only those playing Iron Man games might have some cause to be alarmed if they're consistently placing their leaders in danger and losing them.

Historically they never had any kids.

What do you mean with "people must be doing something wrong"? There is nothing you can do to affect the birthrate at all. It's pure RNG. I am currently having 8 children in my Sun Jian campaign. I had 0 children in my Liu Bei campaign over the course of 22 ingame years.

tbh pure rng lol. my queen Zheng Jiang has 5 children and one when she's even past 50. lmao the game does need a mod for all this.

A mod for an issue is not a fix...
