What counts as a “Heroic Victory”
I’ve gotten it once or twice and I can’t figure out what causes it. Although both times it was a defensive siege I REALLY should have lost (although I also got a pyrric victory doing that a different time).

From what I've seen, a Heroic victory is one that you achieve despite overwhelming odds, usually as a siege defense, thanks to the help of good position and towers.

you have to be outnumbered for one, and usually it involves losing very few of your troops and killing pretty much all the enemy troops. Think something like 1500 vs 1200 and you will need to lose ~100 men or less, that would probably be heroic. I used to farm heroic victories in shogun 2 for extra honor, i had it down in that quite well.

Heroic victories have traditionally been when you earn a clear victory during a battle where the balance of power is largely not in your favor. As others have said, usually this is outnumbered, but not always so. In some games if you have a large force of trash and manage to beat a smaller force of elite units, it can still be a heroic victory.

Bruhh, I literally win fights that are impossible every 3 battles it seems like. I just saved a fight of my 1k against 2 armies around 900 and 1300 a piece (the reinforcements came in immediately) and I STILL didn't get that victory type.
Mind you, I ended with like 550 - 600 guys alive still somehow.

Yeah, try to lose fewer than 150 men in that battle, and then it might count as a Heroic Victory. They are ridiculously hard to get and almost impossible to plan for - getting a small army of elite super-troops to charge a triple-stack of full trash armies will probably not benefit you either, for instance.

I've had some heroic victories that don't really strike me as particularly heroic or special.

One such instance was where I was preparing to attack a small city, but didn't have enough action points to actually reach the city (Stopped just shy).

During the AI's turn, they moved two armies to the city and had one of them come out to attack me, bringing the second army and the city's garrison along as reinforcements. But the armies were both small.

Was only a battle of 1437 (My Side) vs 1692 (Their side). I ended up winning, losing only 291 with the enemy suffering 1100 losses. It was fairly unremarkable... But the game insisted it was a 'Heroic Victory'.

That sounds pretty good. The sheer ratio of kills to losses must have swung that.

Last night in a defense 1 vs 2 I lost all of my retinue and only left 3 generals, it was heroic victory.
