edit: honestly its probably close to impossible with anyone other than Liu Bei
- Start with Guan Yu and Zhang Fei
- Zhao Yun can be recruited through events
- Ma Chao starts out unmarried, so you may be able to get him that way
- No idea for Huang Zhong. He's old, and AFAIK not available through events. Diplo-annexing Liu Biao? Thought that's noted to be very difficult on the forums right now.
1 Guan Yu - Starting general
2 Zhang Fei - Starting general
3 Zhao Yun - event
4 Huang Zhong - Confederation
5 Ma Chao - Marriage/confederation
Huang Zhong is old and may die of natural causes. The best way to get him is confederate/vassal then annex Lui Biao when Huang Zhong is in command of an army on the field. Attack Lui Biao and weaken him to vassalize him or pay him a lot to do so.
Ma Chao is tricky. You must marry him as soon as you can or you will most likely lose him to other fractions. Ma Teng may marry him off or release him from service. He may even disappear into oblivion if you are not careful, not by death, just disappear. Best way to do so is sail down the river, walk past Chang'an and establish relationship with Ma Teng before Ma Chao move elsewhere.
If you destroy, annex or confederate fractions that Huang Zhong or Ma Chao are in as a court noble (not commanding an army), they may move to other fractions or disappear for good. Confederate/annex only when they are commanding an army to get them to join you. I annex Lui Biao when Huang Zhong was a court noble (his army destroyed and was a court noble awaiting deployment) and he moved to other fractions (plus a fraction grudge towards my fraction). Another time I destroyed Lu Bu's fraction which Ma Chao was in as a court noble, and he never appear anywhere else again not even after I conquer the whole of China (almost 40+ turns later). I attack Lu Bu till he offered to be my vassal. I accepted and he swap Lu Bu out for Ma Chao as a general on the field. I immediately annex Lu Bu and get Ma Chao as a general.
#note: To reduce the annex penalty to just - 20 trust is to vassalize but not grant autonomy. After 10 turns, annexing will only penalised you with - 20 and not - 39 or more penalty.
