Cao Zhi was known for being able to write a poem in 7 steps, hence the name of the poem. So Cao Pi asked him to write a poem about brothers in 7 steps, and if he was moved, he would allow him to live.
Apparently a lot of the court burst into tears as he read the poem. So he was allowed to live.
Am I getting this interpretation right?
