Zhang Yan ambush is ridiculous
Seriously, this mechanic needs to be revisited. It is straight-up infuriating to watch an army get ambushed in camp right outside a large city, or to watch an enemy army clearly walk right up to your forces on the campaign map only to magically spring an "ambush" on them.

If the bandit factions have to feel "bandit-y," give them some special units and/or vanguard deployment in battles. But the magic ambush has to go.

I looked for a mod that removes this mechanic, but haven't found one. Please share if you know of any.

The problem isn't a lack of counters. The problem is that this is a silly mechanic that makes no sense in the setting of Three Kingdoms.

Only reason I haven't played him is because of the ambush bug that messes with archers/trebs so they can't fire properly without an attack order.

Step 1: Play as Zhang Yan
Step 2: Make armies of 18 red cavalries
Step 3: Win battles in 15 seconds

I'd rather not have mechanics in the game that allow for this kind of cheese.

Step 1: Play as Ma Teng/Dong Zhuo.
Step 2: Upgrade the three northern Horse Pastures.
Step 3: Make 0 upkeep armies of 18 Qiang cavalry that are immune to fatigue.

Lol. Yep, that's also a big problem. But lots of threads on it already.

If CA would have given it any though, bandits would have horde mechanich which allows them to set up bandit lair anywhere they go, and thus ambush passing armies at the road just like well....bandits do?

And considerign this, they are basically chinese acting like mongols. So why not give them proper cavalry roster instead of giving them 0 upkeep armies. Again lazy design from CA

This... is actually an awesome solution, and one that would actually fit within the framework of 3K.

CA, if you ever see this, do this.

Dawg that would be ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ sick. I did that with the Sarmatians in Rome: Barbarian Invasion, funnest time i had was going on a pilgrimedge to Jerusalem fighting through all the factions in my way.

The ambush ability while attacking should apply to the main faction leader only. If the leader die then the ability pass down to the next general. Instead of having the whole army access to it. This will balance it more.

This would also be a decent solution in alignment with the decision to design around certain heroes.

I agree. if they added at least stance against the ambush.

which would have 50% of the normal reach of the Campaigns

for example
