increase your general level skill, go to war as many as you can, give them weapon, follower, item upgrade, and make sure your general health bar fully replenished. That's how I did in romance mode

Before you duel you can see your and their heroes relative compared strengths. Tells you instantly if you should duel or not.

One thing to keep in mind is if they have friends on the field or not. Take one of those out during your duel and suddenly their dueling guy gets healed and a massive boost to combat stats, which could very well turn the duel quickly. Mouse over the guys to see if they have close friends, if so decide whether or not to butcher the other generals before or after the duel.
Buffs and Debuffs effect people in duels. Have another hero stand close and then cast their skill, watch your general own the other general when they should have lost.

as far as i know. health, your weapon damage, armor and skills

melee evasion doesnt seem to affect duels or atleast i've tested sentinels with 80+ melee evasion and they get hit as much as a champion with low evasion. maybe theres something else that plays out that determines who does damage or if they hit.
through if they were to fight normally without the duel system the evasion seems to work

getting good weapons makes a huge difference in duels. from the crappy weapons generics start with that does a few hundred at most to legendary weapons that start hitting for 2k+

armor helps mitigate the non armor piercing damage so quite good if the enemy hero has mostly non armorpiercing damage

health so you can outlast the enemy in the duel

skills that deal flat damage is quite good for adding a chunk of damage vs the enemy hero.
I only dueled with my Green Champion, was to affraid to loose the other colored Characters.

If the goal is to just kill the enemy general, it's far, far faster and more effective to just gang up on them one at a time with all 3 of your generals and your entire cavalry force.

That said, there's times where it's much better to get them out of the way, as well as just thematic purposes, in which case...

1. Stats. Green/Red/Purple. Max purple with the right gear/skills makes you nigh invincible in melee. Green directly effects health. Red directly effects damage. (purple is melee evasion)

2. Skills. Both dps and support skills, as well as support skills of other characters. Lu Bu + Zhuge Liang basically = anything will die.

3. Weapon stats. Legendary weapons pretty much make more of a difference than anything else. A random rank 1 blue general can often beat rank 4+ legendary generals if the weapon difference is large enough.
