Are the traits RNG?
I keep getting traits that conflicts with Guan Yu Zhang Fei and Zhao Yun.

I manage to get the greed trait with Liu Bei around 10 turns in while Guan Yu got fulfilled. I also manage to get disloyal for some freaking reason and I have 0 clue what I did to lead to this point.

Are they just randomly gained? It seems to me that its a 50\50 chance you either get traits that will help you get along or screw you completely over through the campaign.

I've played Liu Bei and never had negative traits. Might just be good luck on my end. Are you breaking diplomatic agreements? Banishing people from court? Loot towns you capture? I don't know for sure but I think they lead to bad traits. The only negatives I got were maimed, I assume random chance after battles.

Not 100% sure, but historically the traits were a mixture of RNG and actions. I've noticed that when I sack settlements nonstop with certain characters I tend to gain cruel traits, and when I release prisoners a bunch I've gotten kind traits. Could have been total RNG, but seems to be both.

So far all I've did was raise the tax for a few turns because I was short on funds. Most of my province was at 100 happiness so I assumed it I can tax a bit but next thing I know I'm disharmony with half my court which I was actively picking the positive traits that I thought would fit with Liu Bei.

Edit: its weird as hell since this is the first time I ever got greed as Liu Bei and I used to place my tax to the highest setting all the time because I was still getting increased public order at the highest tax rate.

The "bad" traits aren't actually negative though. They tend to increase your instinct stat while good traits tend to increase authority or cunning, maybe resolve.

Negative traits are gain from storyline and losing duels or getting wounded. So losing an eye, or losing a duel etc. That's how you get maimed, one-eyed, and the other negative stats.

True "bad" isn't necessarily negative, but for Liu Bei "cruel" with generals with opposing traits it can screw your court/armies up.

I got Pacifist for Cao Cao early on despite invading and conquering constantly.

Can the traits go away? I know that in TW: Warhammer they tell you how to gain or lose certain traits.

I had to start so many new campaign because of random traits that completely destroy my court relation.
