Friends names poping up?
I haven't seen any mechanic or feature to do this, but now and then I will see a few reoccuring names pop up from my steam friends list in game but not all of them just the same 2/3, any ideas what is going on?

The game picks friends names from friends you played in the past 90 days, you can check out the Options to use all friends, recently played or disable. Cheers!

Ahh even you are into data mining now of our Steam Flist - this wont be a studio to do business with anymore.

So tired of having data mined without fore knowledge of this. This should be put on store page so people know.

If you are looking at this, what else are you looking at that hasn't been disclosed?

What do you mean by data mining? There's nothing being gathered and sent anywhere.

The game uses Steamworks to implement various features like Workshop support, Achievements, Cloud, Trading Cards, etc.
One of the things the Steamworks SDK provides is a function to get the friends list just like every multiplayer game that shows what server your friends are playing.

There's nothing nefarious going on, it just renames the name of the Ninjas to make it more fun. You can easily disable it in the options if you so choose.
