Like Wolfy said though, explosives become your best friend ever.
Also I've discovered that even moreso than before reactions is the single most important stat. Especially if you are playing with the rules that allow for accuracy to degrade over distance the sniper/spotter strategy becomes a lot more difficult.
1) use high explosives, and human grenades. You can purchase both from the start.
2) Don't overlook laser weapons either. Laser rifles are the default gun for my non specialist soldiers though most of the game. They don't require ammo, though this is actually less of an issue in open X-Com since you can disable the 80 item limit, they do reasonable damage against most enemies, they fire fast, and are fairly accurate.
Sorry but I'm not that much of a masochist, I didn't enable the accuracy degradation option in my game. It's already damn hard without it...specially if you don't want to save and reload if things go wrong. I try not to unless I know loosing a battle (like an alien attack on my base) will make me loose the game.
I'll think about enabling that option after I beat my current game though...but I can already see it's going to be a nightmare...
PD: are aliens affected by the accuracy degradation if I enable the option? or does it only works on the player? if it's only on the player but aliens still have their normal accuracy then I don't thik I will enable it..sounds kinda unfair.
You CAN take on battleships by ganging up with interceptors and avalanche missiles but expect HEAVY losses. Firestorms are fast but don't have a global flight range, so you need to have a lot of bases set up to coordinate. Taking down battleships is generally strictly a late-game thing to do unless you can actually catch them on the ground with a full skyranger.
I wait till they land and then do a recovery mission. More difficult but much more elerium to be had which gets in short supply later in the game.
