well, you get a long range radar in "Base" and wait for it to pick up a UFO, and then you try to throw troops at it.

If you don't understand that, you can try to "view the manual" on the store page.

idk 20 years ago I picked up this game and went about shooting down UFO's and killing aliens. I fought my way up to the alien base and beat the daylights out of them. Game over :)) Back then I had never heard of a YouTube video although I did have a real paper manual.
Take advantage of the videos when you get stuck. This is a great game :steamsunny:

It's important to note that games from this era actually expected you to read the manual. In this case, there's tutorial write ups in there. You can get it in pdf form from the game's store page.

you say that, but in this era there are games like Kenshi that Don't even have a manual and expect you to figure out how to play their complex game.

Kenshi

Kenshi comes from an era where the language of video games is pretty well understood by gamers and developers and it's expected that we're all able to communicate online via forums and wikis and stuff.

This stuff just wasn't true back in 94. You were expected to read the manual and for further help, read articles in magazines/standalone strategy guide books. And maybe, just maybe, you were sharing tips and tricks among your circle of nerd friends if you happened to all be playing the same game.

well, the problem is, I'm pretty sure that back in the day, I got this game off a multi-game disc with no manual and I managed to at least figure out the basic gameplay. With Kenshi, even with the in-game tutorial and reading "advice" from peers on the Internet, I ended up going "derp, don't understand this $#%^, give up".
