X-COM: UFO Defense

X-COM: UFO Defense

Do I need to patch this?
I heard the original had some killer bugs, do I need to download a patch or did they fix it for the steam release?

Get open xcom. Fixes most of the bugs. Also includes many quality of life improvements.

I looked it up and it sounds like old computer stuff I dont get
No, it's modern.

its acually quite simple. ill explain it as well as i can, but for some reason i can make the simplest things in the world sound like confusing giberish

-download openXcom from the official site, make sure to download the "windows installer" version, not the 32-bit or 64-bit versions. you could get those but they take more effort and you get no improvements over the other version that i know of
-run the setup
profit

it doesn't run through steam which will dissapoint some people who like to rack up hours on steam but there is a simple fix for that too.

-move all of the UFO defense subfolders from the main folder
-move all OpenXcom subfolders into the UFO defense main folder, then re-name OpenXcom.exe to dosbox.exe
-profit

hopefully i didn't make it too confusing (as i often do with everything) but i've re-read this and it seems easy to follow.

That sounds very simple, thankyou!

I jumped into it last night without looking at the manual and think it went ok, although I couldnt really tell how the fight was going, just that I killed every sectoid as soon as I saw it, and one ran out of the UFO and shot one of my guys at one point. The interface was very clunky so I hope open XCOM helps :D

OpenXcom doesn't change much of the interface but it does have tooltips to explain what the buttons do so your not mindlessly pressing buttons to figure out what they do.

Other things like a an accessable save button. Smoke Grenades actually working and there was another big QoL that has slipped my mind now. Oh yes being able to open doors without having to run scuicidally through them into alien Reaction fire

jenniferthomas28 and gaben... you are cowards. DO NOT PAY ANY ATTENTION TO THEIR RECOMMENDATIONS PEOPLE. If you wish to play the original X-COM, as an amendment to the crap Firaxis is currently peddling with reality-contaminating success, SIMPLY DOWNLOAD X-COM: UFO DEFENSE FROM STEAM. That is all that is required, no mods from shameless trolling sods.
Kipjdgammer Feb 15, 2016 @ 6:12pm
uhh... no. OpenXcom is a mod that every player of this game should get. it doesn't change anything with the gameplay. It makes the game playable by todays standards, and comes with several optional extra mods, plus its free. Now tell me, how does being a coward (and what makes you think that, you don't know either of us) have anything to do with this disscusion?
@gaben
That guy is just trolling man. I supose it's *remotely* possible that the guy has some sort of fanatical devotion to the original pure xcom with it's many bugs and interface problemsl, but that just wouldn't be very smart.

Openxcom lets you actually play on higher difficultys. That's not possible normally as it will always revert to beginner after the first mission in the official one.

Plus you need it to play Piratez, which is several times harder than normal x-com.

Wait... there's reaction fire in this game?

I've been shot at on my own turn sometimes but only when I was shooting and I couldnt work out the pattern to it

From what I've played so far it feels like a fun game, but it also feels very clunky and difficult to control, like I'm wrestling with the game to get my guys to do what I want them to do
Yep, there's reaction fire. You should really read the manual.

Reaction fire works based on:
(your reaction stat X your remaining TU%) vs (the alien's reaction stat X the alien's remaining TU%)

Ufopaedia has some useful articles on the subject, but it's down ATM. These google cache versions of the pages will have to suffice.

Reactions (unit stat)

Reaction Fire Triggers

IMHO, reactions is generally the second most important stat on a soldier. The first being psi strength.
