-download openXcom from the official site, make sure to download the "windows installer" version, not the 32-bit or 64-bit versions. you could get those but they take more effort and you get no improvements over the other version that i know of
-run the setup

it doesn't run through steam which will dissapoint some people who like to rack up hours on steam but there is a simple fix for that too.
-move all of the UFO defense subfolders from the main folder
-move all OpenXcom subfolders into the UFO defense main folder, then re-name OpenXcom.exe to dosbox.exe

hopefully i didn't make it too confusing (as i often do with everything) but i've re-read this and it seems easy to follow.
I jumped into it last night without looking at the manual and think it went ok, although I couldnt really tell how the fight was going, just that I killed every sectoid as soon as I saw it, and one ran out of the UFO and shot one of my guys at one point. The interface was very clunky so I hope open XCOM helps :D
That guy is just trolling man. I supose it's *remotely* possible that the guy has some sort of fanatical devotion to the original pure xcom with it's many bugs and interface problemsl, but that just wouldn't be very smart.
Plus you need it to play Piratez, which is several times harder than normal x-com.
I've been shot at on my own turn sometimes but only when I was shooting and I couldnt work out the pattern to it
From what I've played so far it feels like a fun game, but it also feels very clunky and difficult to control, like I'm wrestling with the game to get my guys to do what I want them to do
Reaction fire works based on:
(your reaction stat X your remaining TU%) vs (the alien's reaction stat X the alien's remaining TU%)
Ufopaedia has some useful articles on the subject, but it's down ATM. These google cache versions of the pages will have to suffice.

IMHO, reactions is generally the second most important stat on a soldier. The first being psi strength.
