Xcom:Ufo Defence.
If you're looking for a real challenge then
XCom:Terror from the Deep.
is your favorite.
I don't like Enemy Unknown..
Cool Graphics but compared to the both games above it is to simple and limit you so much.
Between the other two it's a toss up. There are elements I like and dispise from both.
UFO had silly things like not being able to open doors and the the challenge just dropping away after you get certain techs.
EU/EW is a bit more simplistic so you lose the strategic level but it does add a whole meta game that the others didnt have. I do prefer the EW tactical combat since the Aliens can provide a real challenge and it provides you more variety in how to approach it in each play through.
Graphics doesn't matter to me but I will admit UFO is hard on the eyes. So much grey ad brown.
Got boring after a while.
Every time I try to get anywhere in UFO, I get totally wrecked. OpenXCom's UI improvements have made it a lot more enjoyable to play. Still I feel I have the worst of luck. 2 terror sites before finishing research on laser rifles, and only 1 UFO encounter by the fourth terror mission seems either punishingly random, or like I'm missing something important.
But no matter how many times I'm handed my behind, I still find it more interesting to have another go at than XCom:EU.
Only thing the old game has is it's charm due cheeseness (the Chryssalids look especially stupid in the original. Grinning, black lobsters? Sorry, not scary.)
For example: most of the time you will be rushing to get satelites first. Higher the difficulty - more often that will be the case.
I think the right way to put it is, it lack replayability, since after finishing it first time, every other time is going to be about the same.
1994 X-COM was a great game, but the new Long War mod for EW really is that good.
UFO: Alien Invasion (free) is a good X-COM clone if you think the original is too old.
but i do like them all
even Cenega version has its moments...
but i think they should have made more like ufo apocalypse ... first time with real time
map was to big in turn base so thats is the best game ever and there could auto fight depend on tactical mode you setup....
Hopefully Firaxis will follow it up with the real XCOM.
