If you're looking to play UFO Defense without using DOSBOX, though, I would suggest just grabbing a NIGHTLY version of OpenXCOM and using that. (The 1.0 "milestone" build is horribly out of date to the point where just about everyone strongly encourages using the nightly builds, especially if you ever plan on using mods)
You can get OpenXCOM from https://openxcom.org/ and if you use the installer, when it asks for an installation of UFO: Enemy Unknown or XCOM: UFO Defense, point it towards the XCOM folder in the steam installation (the one with the .bat file, not the one with the dosbox executable). If you happen to have Terror from the Deep as well, you can point the installer to that when prompted for it.
