Steam version is packed together with DOSBox, you don't have to install anything on your own, but only use that if you're familliar with it, with the game, with its quirks and bugs, and you want purist experience.
Otherwise just download OpenXcom.
It will ask you where your your x-com game is. Point it to that in your SteamLibrary\SteamApps\common\XCom UFO Defense\XCOM
I used the installer and the autoupdate for the data patch failed to connect. So i downloaded from the openxcom in the extra's section and installed it into the openxcom folder.
The launcher is in the location of your openxcom folder. Use that not the steam launcher.
Oh look at the graphic settings to make it hi-rez for modern system, loads better :)
at MOST, you wont be able to turn on anti aliasing effects if its VERY old, due to the lack of drivers, but it will still play.
Yes, I have the game in the library for months. Got it for free thanks to HumbleBundle. But I didn't get to play it yet.
I have fond memories of my old games though. The destructable environment, the dynamic maps, defending your base when a ship invated it... especially the last one impressed me a lot, because we fought on the "map" I had build by placing base modules and expansions.
And of course the joy when one of your members returned from a 20-day-treatment at the hospital just to get sent back there for even longer after a single battle xD

Don't mind "extended", its basically the same engine, but with higher mod capability, I think its better to go for first.
but if you are referring to the default 2K config being absolute cancer — don't worry the default config of openxcom is absolute cancer too. if you don't have a 4:3 screen you will not make it run properly
openxcom has a lot of good options but it's unplayable without a 4//3 screen it has no aspect correction
