X-COM: UFO Defense

X-COM: UFO Defense

what is the best remake of this game?
I know about xcom, addon, then sequel, i know about terror from the deep, and this one, finished em all except xcom 2, never played, but does this original first ufo have remake that keeps all the good stuff with better graphics, sounds, animations, or just any newer version of this game, maybe something fan made? was using google, found a couple, non finished, all work in progress...

I'd say Xenonauts, but I didn't really play the other remakes.
Xenonauts stays true to the old X-COM formula, with some minor gameplay changes and better graphics (but it's still 2D)
However, Xenonauts 2 is currently in development, it will have a 3D engine which is great. You can download the free demo here:
https://www.gog.com/game/xenonauts_2_demo
It's currently has just 1 mission, if you complete the mission the game quits, but it gets updated, I think every week.

Other than that, Julian Gollop (the creator of the original X-COM) is working on a new game called "Phoenix Point". Unfortunately, this is pretty far away, at the end of 2018.
It is currently being crowdfunded, if you are interested in pledging money for this project, you can do it here:
https://www.fig.co/campaigns/phoenix-point
Their goal was $500,000, and the are now at $635,000, so they already reached their goal, but if they reach $650,000 they will add driveable vehicles and at $850,000 they will add floating bases to the game. And you can also get early access to the game if you pay enough. I didn't pledge anything, but if you want to, you can... there are still 2 weeks left, so it will probably reach $650,000, not sure about $850,000...
However, this is not a remake of the old X-COM game. It will be a bit different, but it will have many of the gameplay elements and mechanics that X-COM had... building multiple bases and the like..

its not so much a remake, but xcom files is really neat, and adds a lot.

Openxcom has a lot to offer.

Nothing really mate. Xenonauts turned out to be bad for me. Something about just made it feel unfinished. I stay close to OXC as rent says. Area 51 by Hobbes is my favorite mod.

Terror from the Deep?

On a similar note. How would I go about purchasing open xcom? I have played xcom since pc and PS1 lol. I have never seen a game come close to it, and find it unbeleivable that no one has just re-released the original with updated graphics. I never felt the original had anything wrong with it. Thank you in advance.

Terror from the deep is xcom2 from 199x year, cant remmeber, im older gamer, so i played both 1 and 2 as they were originaly released. Xcom 2 is set underwater, its superscary.... hard to play as 1 also. Very addictive, very old, idk how todays os would need to be set for it to work, its a DOS made game. Im sure there is a way to run it just dunno how. Google is your friend.

You don't buy OpenXcom, it's freeware. You just feed it this game's data files and you're done.

nice. so, is openxcom a mod, or a standalone that uses the original xcom content?

went to see youtube gameplay for that, it looks exactly like old first born xcom, cant see any changes...

Standalone reimplementation of the engine that uses the original content (but also supports extensive modifications).

The changes largely do not interfere with the visual presentation. That does not mean there aren't any. http://ufopaedia.org/index.php/Differences_to_X-COM_(OpenXcom)

Thank you for explaining and getting me up to speed. I have purchased xcom, and installed OXC. Just looking to see how to update to nightly, I believe it's called, and then the final mod pack. Going to check the forum for help in that area.
