YUMENIKKI -DREAM DIARY-

YUMENIKKI -DREAM DIARY-

View Stats:
will it be bad? UPDATE: it's bad
UPDATE: the game turned out to be a bad INSIDE (the marketting literally says "inspired by recent indie game juggernauts" and INSIDE is the only one that fits the bill) with references to yume nikki haphazardly thrown around in nonsensical fashion to appeal to the yume nikki fans, who a large subset apparently thinks is good enough. it was developed by AGM & directed by Sergio Matta, who has made some questionable games in the past and allegedly buys positive reviews via craigslist. the game was rushed in 8 months (compare that to INSIDE's 6+ years) and allegedly "supervised" by kikiyama, although there is no proof of how involved he was in the project. the game has tons of bugs due to shoddy programming, and is using the UNITY engine, one of the cheapest engines available.

in summation: the game is the result of a corporation using minimum viable product strategies in order to capitalize on the brand loyalty of devoted yume nikki fans. it is comparable to silent hill: homecoming where they completely miss the point of the franchise and just put references to the older games without much of an understanding of why the original games work.

if you have never played INSIDE, they're pretty much the same price. go play that instead.

addendum: if you enjoyed the game, that is your prerogative. this does not make it a good game though, and saying "well i liked it!!" doesn't hold up to scrutiny. i'm not telling you that you shouldn't enjoy it, you can like anything you want—but you shouldn't call it a good game or imply that a derivative unity game with an 8 month long development cycle is somehow on par with INSIDE, an actual good game.

OLD PRE-RELEASE POST:

a couple things scare me about the descriptions of this game

- "In its original form, RPG Maker darling YUME NIKKI was a divisively controversial work among fans. By contrast, YUMENIKKI -DREAM DIARY- is a collaborative show of the utmost respect for auteur Kikiyama’s seminal release."

this means it's just a remake and meant to replace the original which is deemed too controversial and outdated, and this new version is more easily digestible (which is a bad thing). they probably got rid of the concept of getting lost entirely.

- "This diverging follow-up combines influences from the original game and other recent indie juggernauts to create something wholly unique."

they're taking cues from other recent indie games (like INSIDE probably) which means they're creatively bankrupt and derivative. it's probably no longer an exploration game and just a linear game set in yume nikki with a lot of "hey remember this part?".

- YUMENIKKI -DREAM DIARY- was created under supervision and with the full cooperation from the original creator, Kikiyama themselves.

who knows what that "supervision" actually entails. kikiyama probably just sold the license and lets them do whatever they want, and they're using this as a marketting spin to make it seem more genuine.

that all being said, i really hope it's good. but it's a kadokawa game. so there's probably a 1/64 chance it'll be actually good. do not kneejerk purchase this until you see actual gameplay.

that's my current bet, except combine that with having only 8 months of development time so it's really broken and unrefined too.

Sigh...

Since the [Re-Imagine] video, I am really, really worried... But who knows...

What I would like to see is less of a game, more of an experience... Like the old one. Because it was about walking around, exploration, collecting effects, use them at the right place. It was just right and all the topics, themes, visuals made the game unique.

So can Yume Nikki work in 3D? Absolutely! Having a third dimension can produce really cool, twisted worlds. Especially special mind blowing tricks 3D can produce with crazy shaders and stuff.

Sounds, music. They were so minimalistic and recognizable in the old game. Do we need more? Well, I am fine with environmental sounds, that build some atmosphere. I did like the short 5-10 second music loops in the original one. They worked. They were kinda hypnotizing. Weird.

In 3D, I think having not looping worlds is fine. But they should be interesting with some details, and landmarks that make you wonder what is that, why is there. It's about dreams, things can be completely out of place. Like in the old game.

There is that EDuke 32 based Yume Nikki 3D fan game. Not perfect, and there are things that feels off, but it's close to the original, it's 3D and it's interesting.

I don't expect AAA graphics from this. Based on what they released, it will definitely not AAA and that's 100% fine and expected. It doesn't need realistic look. Not at all. Some places can be inspired from real world, some should be bizarre, surrealistic, and should make no sense. The possibilities for 3D dream worlds are infinite. And they can be so interesting. Unique. Special.

I am really worried from what I've seen. The screenshots made me super hype! The latest trailer was... really disappointing.

Maybe I would be happier if it was an original game with new characters, story and places? Like heavily inspired by Yume Nikki in term of gameplay style, but something new? So they can't ruin it? Idk...

We'll see soon... Fans can make awesome fan games, because they understand the original game.

Did anyone explain to the OP what "controversial" means or am I going to have to beat him over the head with a dictionary?

Since you're such a scholar, go on. Enlighten us.
It's controversial because there are multiple equally-valid interpretations around Madotsuki's dreams, Madotsuki herself, and the implications of violence against yonic imagery ranging from "Sexual abuse" to "Gender dysphoria" and "Fear of puberty". This causes heated debate, which is the requirement.

In other words, the actual definition, not "Some obese blue-haired 'woman' threw a tantrum over it' which is a "cuntroversy".

Personally, I think this entire game was a god-awful idea. It seems like it's trying too hard to be blatantly scary rather than the more subtle, surreal feel of the original. Speaking of subtlety, the abstractness of Madotsuki's dreams seems to be completely gone in this - there's quite literally a mall area, a school, and an urban city judging by the screenshots. Throw in the "influence of other recent indies" and a half-assed art direction, and you've got a recipe for disaster. :jarate:

anything that sparks debate is controversial, having something "easily digestible" means it's very clear cut and safe in order to avoid misinterpretations and possible frustration. the way they're using it in the context i've quoted was in a negative context—something they deem inferior as a juxtaposition to what this current game will be like. this can range from the gameplay to how the story itself is presented, and is insanely detrimental to the aesthetic of yume nikki.

...unless "by contrast" doesn't mean what they think it means, which might actually be the case considering how poorly it's worded. in which case you should beat them over the head with a dictionary instead

looks like there's a bunch of 3d recreations of areas of the old game according to the new screenshots, which i'm fairly unhappy with considering it's just banking on nostalgia. hopefully there's some extra layer of depth to them instead of just being a fan-game looking recreation with awful unity lighting...

Are... Are you really using a nostalgia arguement against a remake? No kidding it's banking on nostalgia, that's why remakes are made. As far as unity lighting, I have to agree it doesn't look the best, but considering the original was made in rpgmaker and how this has had a short development cycle, I'm not gunna complain about it.

if a remakes only selling point is that it reminds you of another better game, it's probably not a very good remake

Are you sure about this? I mean, he's gay (not that there's anything right with that), and this sounds like a very prestigious group.
