2) Sounds like you hit an XL totem for the horde. XL totems triple the number of normal enemies in normal (arena) levels, but in horde levels, an XL totem triples the time you have to survive for instead.
It sounds like you've not played much since the new update, as both of the things you mentioned are fairly normal for the game post-update, which, to be fair, did increase the difficulty for a number of enemies. For your post, the most notable ones would be grubs and ants, which show up often early on and are both significantly more dangerous (grubs got their ram ability and have little to no cooldown between their hits, which can result in very fast deaths if you get trapped, and ants no longer have a sound/animation before they attack...it is now during their attack, so if you hear them, they've already fired. They also can attack more frequently)
