How to get proper symbols for controller?

I really want to play this game, however I find the controls absolutely impossible to understand. Can I somehow change this to show e.g. XBox or PS4 symbols instead of this numeric mess? https://ibb.co/X5LJh2F

We're sorry to hear you're having this issue!

Let's see if we can fix this for you by changing some of the Steam settings.

Can you please follow the steps below:

1. Unplug the controller
   
2. Launch the Steam client and click the controller icon at the top right to enter Big Picture Mode
   
3. Go to Settings > Controller Settings and make sure that "Playstation/Xbox/Generic Configuration Support" are all toggled on.
   
4. Then simply plug your controller and retest the game

Thank you very much for the help.
None of the controller checkboxes were toggled on.
After doing so and attaching the controller it was immediately detected as a wired xbox 360 controller (which it is).
Blasphemous now has the proper controls and symbols to boot. I'm off to playing the game now :-)
