DLC and penitence.

Is the DLC and penitence ng+ only, or did I mess up by ascending and not doing the dlc first? Should I ignore trying to 100%+ ng+ until I have completed all penitence? I'm assuming I get a wipe each time

Not entirely, there's a number of changes and improvements, including new NPCs that are in the base game. Nacimiento (the boy who upgrades your flasks) for example is a new NPC, some other NPCs have been updated and there are a bunch of new rosary beads along with a host of graphical updates and other stuff.

For the new penitence mode it's NG+ only, and the new bosses and story is also NG+ only. You should try to get 100% of prayers, beads, sword hearts, relics and mea culpa upgrades as they carry over to NG+. You should probably try to max out the church donations too as that resets, what doesn't carry over to NG+ are health, flask, rosary knot and fervour upgrades along with any tears you have will be reset to zero. Collectables are also reset (those gross bones and body parts you collect).

I've already moved from ng to ng+ from a 100% save, just at the 1st boss getting killed. I don't remember church donations, unless thats new. Can I cancel the penitence after finishing the game, and do the dlc from that point with no penitence, but still get the reward for completing a penitence? Or I am stuck doing dlc with penitence? Can't remember which one I picked, but this is pretty hard, not sure if because of penitence or just ng+. Going to go around looking for more upgrades. :x

Yeah the church donations are new, you can donate tears for some new rosary beads, the ability to fast travel between save shrines (the most useful one), save shrines restore fervour to full and a new skin.

You can cancel your penitence but you wont be able to choose another one until you beat the game again, and you wont get any rewards. You'll still be able to do the new DLC story and bosses though.

A couple of tips I can give you for starting out is there's a number of health, fervour, rosary knot and flask upgrades you can reach before killing any bosses, I'd definitely suggest you go get them. I believe there's 3 health and 3 fervour upgrades, one of the health upgrades requires using the relic that allows you to fall in to pits to get early access to the sewers. There should be 4 knots you can get too, along with 5 empty bile vessels and I think 2 quicksilver, all of which are super helpful for making it through the early NG+

So the penitence reward, you get it after you ng+ again? Want to do dlc, but going through a playthrough without penitence reward seems sucky. Someone on reddit said "You could complete the game with the penitence to get the reward, abandon it and continue with the dlc afterwards."

but yeah, i'll go collect as much as I can next time I play, then try to get far enough to get the church open. Thanks

I'm not sure if you can do that but it sounds possible, you get the reward when you kill the last boss, if you load the game again after that you'll be put back before the last boss so you can kill it again. You have manually ascend your save game to start a another NG+
