This game is designed to be played through multiple times; the first run is meant to be finished the wrong way. The "bad ending" is part of the whole story and not just an ending.
Even the side quests have multiple outcomes that you could never see if you only play the game once. Maybe you could have saved that person, maybe you could have eased their suffering...
Eventide does not require you to play the game in NG+. You would only need to start a new game if you failed the Eventide Quest. Failure is one of the Outcomes you are meant to experience in order to learn the full story. You fail, you explore, and you get clues that tell you what you could have done differently. Then you play again and try to do things "right".
