Play under 2 hours and refund it if you don't enjoy it.
Im still looking for Blasphemous alternatives though. Dead Cell pretty good and thats the only game I had
Some of my recommendations:
Bloodstained is good, but more of a traditional metroidvania (it's made by one of the guys, who basically invented the genre) with a stronger focus on RPG elements, compared to Blasphemous.
I can vouch for Vigil, too. Salt&Sanctuary but Bloodborne, more or less.
It can be a bit jank. Also, at first, it may look weird that the MC's model is 3D, while the rest of the game is this easy-to-animate, simple 2D style you see in games, like Ender Lilies or Death's Gambit. But combat's fun, exploration is fun and it nails the atmosphere. Not a fan of the more oldschool save-system though.
Lost Ruins is also fun, if a bit short. If you don't have an aversion to anime, then the biggest issue might be the combat, which is slow on purpose. Attacking stops you dead in your tracks, wether you're in mid-air or on the ground. I like it, but most people, who are used to playing these type of games, expect a more dynamic combat.
Hollow Knight was a huge disapointment. Its more like a labyrinth simulator, which has no feeling of accomplishment on top of that. I felt more lost than on my first run of Blasphemous and the art style and story telling was definetly created for a teenage audience im not part of.
Down boy. Igarishi did not invent anything. He ripped off Metroid just like every other game in this genre. He gets credit for reviving Castlevania and added a lot of cool features to the genre but it was all Metroid.
>Hollow Knight was a huge disapointment. Its more like a labyrinth simulator, which has no feeling of accomplishment on top of that. I felt more lost than on my first run of Blasphemous
That's kind of the point. HK is designed for more wandring and getting lost and a great sense of exploration. But almost every path ends up somewhere worthwhile so it's all worth the wandering. Not for everyone, I guess.
Too bad, because it seems to be really promising. I will try it anyway and hoping the best. :)
Only tried ritual of the moon, but character animations feels strange for me (like slow motion or something like that).
I'm gonna try Vigil then. Salt and Sanctuary is a real gem. I had tons of fun with it.
My only problem with Moonscars is that it was extremely buggy at Day1.
I totally agree about Hollow Knight has strange map structure (it's like Salt and Sanctuary), but the game was really fun. I think I just didn't give enough time for it.
Anyone tried Salt and Sacrifice?
Also might wanna check the titles that started it all, Symphony of the night and Super Metroid, for example. Hold up well enough still today imho and easily available on emulators.
2. Valdis Story - Great soundtrack, cliffhanger story since the dev never made a sequel, solid combo and leveling systems.
3. Touhou Luna Nights - low budget, less polished precursor to Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit in Wonder Labryinth. Both are action oriented/arcady metroidvanias.
4. Bloodstained - Aims to copy/paste Castlevania SOTN and succeeds in most ways.
5. Steamworld Dig 1 and 2 - Perhaps too Minecraft-esque but a solid Metroidvania experience with both. The sequel offers the most bang for the buck.
6. Guacamelee 1 and 2 - Fun tongue-in-cheek adventures with smooth combat. Perhaps a bit too simplistic but still challenging endgame content.
7. Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom - Cartoon graphics make it stand out. Sequel to the Wonder Boy remake that seems more polished and fleshed out but still quite linear overall from what I have played.
8 Axiom Verge - Very reminiscent of Metroid. The sequel ventures pretty far aesthetically but is otherwise similar. Can be easy to get lost without a guide.
9. Timespinner - Very similar gameplay to Castlevania SOTN. Story is a bit anime and hammed up but the soundtrack is great. Multiple endings and side content to explore on NG+.
10. Cave Story - You fight with a gun but it has the exploration of a Metroidvania with multiple outcomes to discover.
11. Minoria - Pseudo-sequel to Momodora Reverie Under the Moonlight. Short with a interesting art style and solid mechanics. Made by a very small team.
12. Environmental Station Alpha - Metroid on an Atari 2600. Great sound design with upgrades to find as you explore.
13. The Messenger - To be fair, this game is more Ninja Gaiden than Metroidvania for the most part but it does open up to involve more exploration in the second half. Story is humor-riddled with some interesting plot twists.
14. Hyper Light Drifter - More of a top-down, Zelda-esque adventure but it has plenty to find and upgrade for a NG+ run. Great music with solid controls and premise.
15. Death's Gambit - This game got a free overhaul adding new areas, bosses, etc. I thought it was ok on release but I never loved it. Think 2D Dark Souls, stamina dependent attacks.
16. Ender Lilies - Nice soundtrack and art design.
17. Ori Blind Forest/Will Wisps - both are beautiful. The sequel (Will) has more engaging combat and upgrade mechanics.
18. Vigil: The Longest Night - If Bloodborne 2 was made in 2D it would be this game. Great music, solid build and enemy variety. Got a bit tedious towards the end if you are doing side quests and specific endings but there is reason to return for NG+ as a result.
There are also some other good options that are not on Steam.
Salt and Sacrifice is more grindy and revolves around a 2D Monster Hunter vibe compared to Salt and Sanctuary. Gameplay is still similar to the original for what that is worth but I like the first one most.
Another few I'd recommend are:
- Lost Ruins
- Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight
- The two Ori games (Not that similar, but are still great)
- Bloodstained: ritual of the night (only bad thing about this is the clunky controls and lack of dodge, oh and contact damage on every enemy that somehow deals more damage than their actual attacks xD)
Also DEFINITELY go for Vigil, it's also amazing.
And two more games that don't exactly fall into the genre, but are nonetheless great:
- La Mulana 1 and 2
- Hollow Knight: I will try once again and see if I can play it through. :)
- I never played with Symphony of the night, but it looks really cool!
- I also saw a speedrun contest on twitch once where they were playing with Super Metroid, just forgot it's name, but I know this game!
- I own Ori Blind Forest/Will Wisps, just didn't play any of it through. Ori is a really good and cute game in my opinion. I really like the atmosphere, the music and the story telling.
- Almost bought Steamworld Dig at release, but after found something else to play. Completely forgot about that, but I like the style of that game.
- Messenger is really common, I mean I didn't play with it yet, but steam often pops it up, so it's known
- You guys really like Vigil, so I think I will buy it. I am a bit sad about Death's Gambit, it looks promising, but some say the game is not "that" good.
Lost ruins seems to be so cool....I remember this game from somewhere!
Momodora is almost the same style as Lost ruins, just has a bit "older" graphics as style.
Ender Lilies is a beatuiful game btw, except the early dodging everything else is cool in it. I like the background music and the art style. And it's own mechanics is so cool.
This game seems to be cool, I saw it few days ago, but sadly it doesn't even have release date and 2022 almost over. I am really interested in it.
There's a new game also, called Dark Light. The only problem with it is the stuttering problem. But game looks kinda good, so if they will fix it, that will worth a try also. Metroidvania with sci-fi elements.
OP, check "The Last Faith". Maybe you will like it
