Ascending for the second time?

In my save, I already ascended once and beat the game in NG+. Now I want to access the DLC questline and I need to start over for that. If I ascend again on this already ascended save, will it be the same NG+ or is there something like NG++ (like in Dark Souls, where every new playthrough ramps up the difficulty over the last one so you can get to crazy things like NG+7 etc.).

From my experience, it stays on NG+, but the additional difficulties are achieved in a different way - taking on one of the Penances at the start. But if you just want to run through the game again to experience the DLC, simply ascending and choosing no penance should be fine and leave the game in the difficulty you just completed.
