Report a translation problem
Compared to the pixel-perfect animations of other prayers, this one seems out of place. To me, it looks pretty rough and flat, sort-of 8-bit, I don't know: unfinished?
IIRC it was just a wave before, starting from the penitent one location and spanding outward quickly. Now it seems to targets enemies one by one, making it slower to kill them is there are several on screen, allowing you to get hit.
Haven't checked in-game, but watching the video in the Reddit thread linked below, it seems to have worked quite the way you're describing pre-DLC2:

Yeah, you're right. It seems it was just visually a wave but the actual damage was as it is now.
