My best guess is both are based on the ancient Roman funerary masks. Neither game is truly original in that regard. You have also seen a similar helmet + mask in the Gladiator movie.
Creatively speaking, there is nothing really unique and original, but lots of possible combinations of previously existing things. It is not surprising that some might end up alike.
Yeah exactly. The "capirote" or the "pointed hat" dates back to the Spanish Inquisition which was founded in 1478 (thanks Google).
Aren't the thorns deriving from Jesus Christ perhaps?
Not a troll attempt, but kind of a weak criticism at best.
They said that they wanted an inexpressive face and they are heavily inspired by roman imperial masks.
As far as I remember the hoods were inspired by penitents during Holy Week. You can google both of these and you will see the similarity.
I don't know the other similarities or differences but thorns are used for penance as far as I remember. When I was reading Bertrand Russel's Western philosophy history, he mentioned a saint (or a simple religious guy I can't remember) throwing himself into thorns etc. so I am not surprised they used it.
Edit; typo
I think once you recognize there are no totally original ideas in the world is a fact, you start to appreciate the niche designs more when you compare them: its the combination of tropes in new ways that matters. Like I wasn’t even upset when I discovered the Xanthous headwraps in Dark Souls was a King In Yellow reference, I just thought “this look is so dope and needs more attention.”
