Blasphemous penitent one ripped off Looking glass knight look hard
The similarities are just so blatant in every regard, from the helmet to the sword. Really ruins the penitent one for me, since for the longest time I thought the design was totally original.

Yeah, there are some similarities. I wouldn't say "from helmet to sword" but rather, only helmet AND sword. And even then they are only similar.

My best guess is both are based on the ancient Roman funerary masks. Neither game is truly original in that regard. You have also seen a similar helmet + mask in the Gladiator movie.

Creatively speaking, there is nothing really unique and original, but lots of possible combinations of previously existing things. It is not surprising that some might end up alike.

i find it frustrating, although i still love the penitent ones design
They have thorns and the whole face thing going on, and thats about it. There are no wholly original ideas, and besides Penitant One and Looking Glass have their own unique shticks that make them look nice either way

The pointy hat the Penitent One, Deogracias, and some others wear are modelled after those worn by penitents (called "nazarenos") during the Holy Week (Easter) processions.

Yeah exactly. The "capirote" or the "pointed hat" dates back to the Spanish Inquisition which was founded in 1478 (thanks Google).

Sure, but the facial region and the thorns are a rip off

Aren't the thorns deriving from Jesus Christ perhaps?

Not a troll attempt, but kind of a weak criticism at best.

not really important, I just found the resemblance between the two to be incredibly similar, a fact which weakened my previous inclination on how i felt the peitent ones design was totally original. but take that for what you will

In the art book they have mentioned their inspirations though, maybe glass knight is inspired by the same resources?

They said that they wanted an inexpressive face and they are heavily inspired by roman imperial masks.

As far as I remember the hoods were inspired by penitents during Holy Week. You can google both of these and you will see the similarity.

I don't know the other similarities or differences but thorns are used for penance as far as I remember. When I was reading Bertrand Russel's Western philosophy history, he mentioned a saint (or a simple religious guy I can't remember) throwing himself into thorns etc. so I am not surprised they used it.

Edit; typo

There is the whole thing where a crown of thorns is associated with Jesus to take into consideration, I think.

I think once you recognize there are no totally original ideas in the world is a fact, you start to appreciate the niche designs more when you compare them: its the combination of tropes in new ways that matters. Like I wasn’t even upset when I discovered the Xanthous headwraps in Dark Souls was a King In Yellow reference, I just thought “this look is so dope and needs more attention.”
