Sword Heart in Graveyard of the Peaks

So i just got to Convent of Our Lady of the Charred Visage and found the shortcut back down to Graveyard of the Peaks i also found a sword heart shrine behind a locked gate but no switches or anything around to open it. Can someone tell me what i need to do?

Are you talking about the little red spots in front of the gate? I've never seen them before what are they?
