Tree guy and oil?

So as i understand from other threads the oil you find at the top of the "Convent of our lady" is to save tree guy aka Gemino. Problem is i never found the item to use for the oil and first when i entered the "Where Olives Trees Wither" he was already dead.

Where did it all go so wrong?

He gives you the item when you speak to him while he's alive. The thing is, I think a lot of players went through Mercy Dreams and killed the boss there before discovering Where the Olive Trees Wither. You need to talk to Tree Man before killing any of the bosses that grant Humiliations. He gives you a golden thimble to fill, you beat Lady of the Charred Visage, fill the thimble immediately after getting the Holy Wound, take it back to him, leave the "room" he's in and go back to get the Frozen Olive.
